LAHORE: Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) chief Tahirul Qadri asked the United States of America (USA) on Saturday to stop supporting corrupt elements in Pakistan as individual corruption had wreaked havoc on national institutions.

He was addressing overseas Pakistanis at a convention in New York according to a statement issued on Saturday. Qadri said some politicians had not honoured their promises before the last general elections about bringing back black money stashed abroad. He said they had joined hands after the elections and had begun looting the national exchequer afresh.

Qadri said the government was trying to hinder the holding of local body elections. He said the government knew that fresh constituency delineations, formulation of new voter lists and the holding of a census would culminate in general elections. Qadri said the people wanted elections to be held as quickly as possible.

He said those who had criticised the PAT’s 70 day-sit-in in Islamabad now regretted what they had said in their speeches.

Qadri invited those present at the convention to form a Union of Overseas Pakistanis to safeguard their rights in Pakistan. He said the PAT was committed to safeguarding their rights and honour in Pakistan.

Qadri said the party would also safeguard their properties and savings in the country.
